On Thursday, February 16, 2023, at 7:30 pm, baritone Robert Tudor and pianist Erica Rumbley will present Paris, Berlin, and Beyond at Shepherd University’s School of Music in W.H. Shipley Recital Hall. The program will feature music sung in the salons of Berlin, Paris, and Europe in the late-19th and early 20th centuries by Richard Strauss, Maurice Ravel, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
In this unique performance, Robert will weave stories about the composers and their music throughout the recital, and project art of that period related to the poetry. The audience will learn about Richard Strauss, his father forbidding him to follow the music of his contemporaries, and the breakout compositions that made history. They will hear about Maurice Ravel competing to have his music featured in a film about Don Quixote. The recital will conclude with the evocative and stirring song cycle by Ralph Vaughan Williams, The House of Life. The cycle explores facets of profound love and loss through the poetry and paintings of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Previous audiences have remarked how they have a deeper connection to the story through visual media related to the story.
