Shepherd University’s Masterworks Chorale, conducted by Dr. Jason Strunk, will present Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, a powerful cantata composed in 1936, blending sacred texts with poetry by Walt Whitman and excerpts from political speeches. Written in the shadow of rising global tensions before World War II, the work juxtaposes the haunting beauty of the Latin Mass with the raw emotional force of Whitman’s Civil War poetry, creating a deeply human and urgent musical plea for peace. The work is scored for soprano and baritone soloists, chorus, and orchestra.
